Plans have been unveiled for a new £1.3m footbridge in Derby City Centre.
Derby City Council and Derby Cityscape have commissioned public art design specialist Dennis O’Connor to create the bridge, which will be over St Alkmund’s Way. It will link the city centre with St Mary’s Church.
Work on the new bridge, which replaces the bridge demolished last month, will start next month. It will open officially in October.
The replacement bridge is in addition to the Whitby Bird swing bridge, which is set to be built as part of a £3.8m improvement scheme for Cathedral Green (news 03.07.07).
The footbridge will be over and become Derby’s most seen piece of public art, seen by 70,000 motorists every day.
Funding for the bridge has come from Derby City Council, the Department for Transport and the Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership.
