Next and Primark are set to anchor the new £43m mall reconfiguration at British Land’s Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield
Due to open in Summer 2007, the reconfiguration, together with the current refurbishment of all the main mall areas, is the biggest redevelopment of the shopping centre since it opened in 1990, with a total investment of £91m.
Value fashion retailer Primark has taken a 73,000 sq ft (6,782 sq m) store trading over two floors.
Next is to relocate from its Park Lane store in the centre to a larger 66,000 sq ft (6,131 sq m) unit next to Primark, over two levels, making it its fifth largest store in the country.
Next’s old store will be relet either as it is or subdivided.
Primark and Next’s units are being created from the former Sainsbury’s unit which was surrendered in August 2005. The development follows on from the reconfiguration of Allders, which included an extension for Boots and the relocation of WH Smith.
This will enable a new mall to be created at Upper Level linking Next and Primark.
The new mall area will also comprise of a glazed Atrium, mall café, feature staircase and lift which will enhance circulation in the Market Street Mall area of the centre.
In addition to the reconfiguration works, Meadowhall is also undergoing a £48m refurbishment of all the main mall areas.
