Sajid Javid has been made communities secretary as part of new prime minister Theresa May’s cabinet reshuffle, replacing Greg Clark.

Sajid Javid

Javid is a former managing director at Deutsche Bank, and entered politics in 2010 when he was elected MP for Bromsgrove.

In his new job as secretary of state for Communities and Local Government, he will be responsible for setting rules on everything from council spending to planning laws.

He is a long-time eurosceptic, but campaigned to remain in the European Union in last month’s referendum.

Clark “thrilled” with new role

Greg Clark will now head up a new department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The department will replace both the Department for Energy and Climate Change and the Department of Business, Innovation, and Skills (BIS), which May abolished today.

Commenting on his newly created role, Clark said: “I am thrilled to have been appointed to lead this new department charged with delivering a comprehensive industrial strategy, leading government’s relationship with business, furthering our world-class science base, delivering affordable, clean energy and tackling climate change.”

May’s ruthless reshuffle

The moves come as part of a ruthless reshuffle from May, who today sacked many senior cabinet figures, including former justice secretary Michael Gove (see below for full details of the new cabinet).
