I'm sorry but the previous chancellor's SDLT changes are very straightforward.

If you purchase a property for less than £937.5k you pay less in SDLT. This is a good thing as this is the vast majority of transactions.

If you purchase a property for more than £937.5k you pay more SDLT. This has put the brakes on the top end of the market which is most welcome.

The additional surcharge on 2 properties+ is more questionable. It probably does lead to a more egalitarian housing market however as it leaves more for as yet non-homeowners.

This article is written from the angle of house builders, surveyors, property investors and property agents who has vested interests in a continued property bubble, not the country as a whole.
