Celebrating student housing’s graduation

The year was truly the one when student housing finally threw off its label as an alternative asset class and reached maturity. 

The facts speak for themselves. Total volumes and transactions into student housing for 2015 are expected to break all records and reach £6 billion. Investors into the asset class are now more diverse than ever, with Middle Eastern and Asian investors set to join the North American and European institutional money that has recently piled in to the sector. Investment vehicles into the sector can be found across the spectrum – from banks to private equity to institutional investors to funds and even REITs, such as Empiric Student Property REIT.

In light of this, Addleshaw Goddard has produced ‘Education Nation: the graduation of student housing’, a report on the state of the sector which will be launched at Property Week’s Student Accommodation conference on 3 December.   

The conference itself will bring together key industry figures to discuss the state of the market. During the day, keynote presentations and panel sessions will touch on how governmental policy may threaten the UK’s higher education sector, what the student wants from their accommodation, what opportunities investors see in the market going forward, how much scope there is for more international investment and the best ways for all of student housing’s diverse stakeholders to work together.

The conference will also consider what lessons the UK’s fresher asset classes like PRS can learn from student accommodation and what opportunities are available for investors and developers in Europe.
