Elizabeth Taylor's debut theatre gets extension go-ahead

17:02 | 20.11.09

The theatre where Elizabeth Taylor made her London stage debut has been given consent for an extension as a part of a package of benefits arising from the Victoria Transport Interchange scheme.

Under Land Securities scheme’s section 106 agreement the Victoria Palace Theatre, opposite London’s Victoria Street station, will be given an eight-storey, 16,600 sq ft extension to its rear.

Planning and City Development Committee chairman, Councillor Alastair Moss, said: "Theatre has helped shaped our city over centuries and forms the lifeblood of its cultural and entertainment offer which attracts visitors from around the world.

"With the theatre industry contributing more than £1bn to London's economy every year it is vital we support it at every opportunity. The Victoria Palace Theatre has staged some of the capital's most exciting shows from Billy Elliot to Buddy in its Grade II listed building and this new addition to the theatre will allow it to update its facilities so that future generations can continue to enjoy its great shows for years to come."

The Victoria Palace Theatre was designed by the renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham and is currently showing Billy Elliot.
