Paddy Jackson

Paddy Jackman, bursar, Ardingly College

With 11 years experience in the Higher Education sector as the Commercial Director at the University of the Arts and then Imperial College, Paddy has considerable experience developing student accommodation both working with the private sector and through university funded projects.Early in 2010 Paddy decided to take a change in direction and is now Bursar at Ardingly College a major independent school in West Sussex, but maintains close ties with the HE sector.



Andrew Appleyard, Head of specialist real estate funds, Aviva

Andrew joined the investment industry in 1987.Andrew manages the Specialist Property funds team. The Specialist funds include 9 sector focused investment funds with a gross property value of approximately £4 billion (as at end June 2009)Andrew joined Aviva Investors in October 2003 as fund manager of the Life funds’ out of town retail & leisure portfolio, moving to his present role in November 2007.


Charles Marshall, Chief Executive, Liberty Living

A chartered accountant and banker for 20 years before investing in and floating a technology company on the London AIM market, he joined Brandeaux as Group Financial Director in July 2004. In January 2005 he became CEO of Liberty Living, the property asset management company for Brandeaux’s investments in student accommodation.

Heriberto Cuanalo, Director of student services, Corporate Residential Management Ltd

Eri graduated as top MBA student from Oxford Brookes and has a background in innovation projects on marketing, operations and finance across several industries, including consumer goods, hospitality, where he was also a university lecturer, and mining, where he worked on financial analysis and strategy projects for firms like Xstrata, Implats and Lonmin.  In 2000 Eri worked on financial projects with Savills and subsequently joined the Savills off-shoot, CRM, to help build the marketing, systems and operational infrastructure that has been the basis of CRM Students growing to the UK’s recognised market leader in the management of student accommodation assets. 


Joanne Winchester, Director, valuation advisory, CB Richard Ellis

As Head of CBRE Student Housing, Jo advises student housing investors, developers and bankers. In 2010, valuation projects included Urbanest’s 100 East Road, N1 and Gatehouse Bank’s acquisitions at Loughborough, Liverpool and Oxford. Jo has provided development finance advice to Barclays, HSBC and RBS for schemes started by Unite, Opal and Watkin Jones.

John Nesbitt

John Nesbitt, Managing Director, Victoria Hall

John is a co-founder and Managing Director of Victoria Hall Ltd, one of the largest private providers of bespoke student accommodation in the UK. He has grown the business from the first Victoria Hall scheme developed in Manchester in 1997 to a portfolio comprising over 5,500 beds in the UK and student residences in Valencia, Spain and Bremen, Germany. John has maintained the core company focus of location, quality, service and pastoral care as the business has continued to expand. John is currently overseeing the development of a new Victoria Hall 435 bed student residence in Wembley, London.

Keith White SA

Keith White, Group Managing Director, Corporate Residential Management Ltd

Keith’s career began at Nationwide, progressing to the senior executive team.  He was a lead manager in the acquisition of Quality Street, a £132m residential investment company, and the launch of £98m of BES investment schemes.  Keith joined Black Horse Agencies (Lloyds TSB Group) in 1995 to lead their residential portfolio management business, bought by Savills two years later at which point Keith appointed as a Director of Savills’ CRM business.  In 2004 he led an MBO from Savills making CRM independent. Keith is a recognized expert in the management, design and specification of purpose-built student accommodation, which has helped CRM to become the largest independent manager of this asset class in the UK.


Louise Archer, Senior Corporate Banking Manager, HSBC

Louise Archer has been with HSBC for 20 years working in Retail, Commercial and Global Markets.  Her current role is Senior Corporate Manager covering Real Estate clients around the country, including a specialism in Student Residential accommodation, providing both development and investment finance to the leading players in the market.

Duncan Parr, director planning and regeneration, Savills

Duncan has been involved in student and education development for over 10 years. He has advised a wide range of clients interested in student development, including promoting schemes in most of the inner London boroughs, some via appeal. He is also currently promoting student schemes in other metropolitan areas.
Duncan is a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and is a Chartered Geographer. He is a Member of the Expert Witness Institute and a Law Society Registered Witness. Duncan is a Member of the Institute of Directors and a School Governor.


Mark Allan, Chief Executive, UNITE

Mark, 38, was appointed to the role of Chief Executive in September 2006, having previously served as Chief Financial Officer for three years.  Mark held a variety of other roles in the business prior to that, having joined the Group in 1999.  As Chief Executive he chairs the Group’s Leadership Executive and has overall responsibility for the Group’s performance against its business plan targets, whilst continuing to develop UNITE’s growth strategy.

Mark Burchfield, Managing Director, Cablecom Networking

After Graduating from Sussex University with a joint degree in Physics and Business Management, Mark pursued a career in engineering culminating in a Directorship for a large national Electro Mechanical Engineering company. In the 90’s Mark moved into the IT sector concentrating efforts on the managed service sector within the City of London. Mark joined CableCom Networking Ltd as Sales Director in 2002, and helped create the Managed Service business shortly afterwards. As result of an MBO supported by ISIS Equity Partners, Mark became MD of the company, and with his senior management team he has transformed the company, focusing on delivering specifically targeted student accommodation Internet based services. As a consequence of this, and via attention to service level detail, CableCom Networking Ltd is now the UK’s leading supplier of student accommodation fully managed Internet services serving over 350 sites throughout the UK.


Mark Quigley, Director, Real Estate, Barclays Corporate

Mark Quigley is a Director within the Real Estate Team in Barclays Corporate and is Head of the Student Accommodation Team there.  Having been at Barclays for over 20 years now, Mark has worked in property finance since the mid-1990s and has been involved in funding student accommodation transactions for the best part of a decade.  In addition to an Associateship and a Financial Studies Diploma, in terms of banking qualifications, Mark also has an MBA.


Martin Hadland, Partner, Kingsturge

Martin has unique experience in the sector combining 11 years experience in private practice with 14 years as Director of Estates at 3 London universties.  He joined King Sturge in April 2010 as a Partner in the London Higher Education team providing advice on student accommodation, esatate strategies and business cases.

Michael Brodtman, Executive Director, valuation advisory, CB Richard Ellis

Michael Brodtman is the Head of Valuation at CB Richard Ellis.  He joined the investment department in 1981, when his role encompassed a wide range of advice to institutions and property companies, with an emphasis on development funding on behalf of insurance company clients.  In the second half of the 1980s, Michael developed a specialisation in tax based development and finance. Michael was made a partner (now director) in 1991, and assumed responsibility for the valuation department in 1995.  Michael is a regular contributor to conferences and journals on valuation matters.  He is a non-executive Director of IPD, the world’s leading provider of independent property indices and benchmarking, and is a member of the UK Executive Board of CB Richard Ellis. 


Raj Kotecha, Executive Director, AMRO Real Estate Partners

Raj Kotecha is a co-founder and Managing Director of Amro Real Estate Partners and leads the firm’s activities in transaction origination and investor management. He graduated with a 1st class degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and has a Masters Degree in Finance with Distinction from Cambridge University. Raj’s career has included experience in investment banking, strategy consulting and as a serial entrepreneur founding and exiting businesses within the consumer food industry and he has since become an active real estate investor and developer.


Sean O’Shea, Chief Executive, UPP

Sean is the Chief Executive of UPP, the leading provider of campus infrastructure, student accommodation and asset management services. With over 15 years experience in the sector, Sean is responsible for UPP’s strategy and bespoke public-private partnership approach. UPP has raised over £1.1bn investment for UK universities.

Simon Scott Speaker

Simon Scott, Investment Director, Watkin Jones Group

Simon started his career in the commercial investment sector, before moving to Savills in 1997 to assist in the development of the residential investment team.  Here he developed a specialism in the disposal of purpose built student halls, countrywide, to both institutional investors and owner operators.  In 2009 he joined the board of Watkin Jones Group, a major provider of student accommodation to the investment market.

Stephen Brooks

Stephen Brooks, Regional Director of education, Santander

Stephen Brooks is the Regional Director of Santander Corporate Banking for Education, Healthcare and Communities. Leading a team of twelve across London and the South East,with offices in London, Reading, Gatwick and Southampton. He has spent 5 years at Santander building the bank’s presence in the UK prior to which he worked with the Public Sector and Charities team at AIB (GB) and twenty years in the sector. Keen on building relationships rather than transactional banking he has driven a strong growth agenda at Santander with some of the best names in the sector.

Bob Crompton

Bob Crompton, chief executive, Knightsbridge Student Housing LTD

Bob Crompton set up Knightsbridge Student Housing Ltd in July 2010 with backing from Oaktree Capital Management Ltd, a global private investment firm. Bob has extensive experience of the student accommodation market in the UK and in Europe having previously held the position of CEO at Victoria Hall Ltd. Bob is a qualified engineer and an MBA.

Kate Freer

Kate Freer, Development Manager, The Blackstone Group

Kate Freer is the Development Manager within The Blackstone Group, the world leader in private equity real estate investment. Blackstone have invested in a number of Student Housing Investments under the ‘Nido’ Platform.  Kate has recently completed the development of ‘The World’s Tallest Student Building’ at Spitalfields. Kate has been working at Blackstone for 5 years and responsible for an extensive development programme across all sectors of the UK and Europe Real Estate market. She leads a team of professionals dealing with all development and Asset Management related activity. Kate is a member of the RICS and has a masters in Real Estate Investment.


Ian Caldwell, director of estates, Kings College London 

Ian is a chartered architect, graduating from Strathclyde University in 1977.  His early career included experience in private practice, local and central government where he was responsible for projects in the Royal Palaces, the Ministry of Defence, the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery in London, the National Galleries of Scotland and the Supreme Courts of Scotland.  In 1989 Ian joined Deloitte’s, after which he has been Director of Estates at Sheffield Hallam University, Imperial College and King’s College London. Ian’s responsibilities at King’s College London cover estates management, facilities management, project and development management and maintenance of the physical estate.  Acting for the College, he is a director of the South Bank Employer’s Group, a director of the Strand, Trafalgar Square and Aldwych Association and a founder member of the Chancery Lane Association.  He is also chairman of the Higher Education Quality Design Forum.



Pat McGrath, director of accommodation & campus services, University of Sheffield

Pat is the Director of Accommodation & Commercial Services at The University of Sheffield.  The Department operates 6,000 beds of which 3900 are owned by Catalyst Higher Education (Sheffield) plc as part of a £160m deal culminating from the University’s Student Residences Strategy. Pat is on the executive board of the College and Universities Business Officers (CUBO), which represents 96 institutions.
