The winter sunshine at Mapic in Cannes last week did little to improve the mood of one esteemed PR, who had a run-in with an overzealous French ticket inspector.

The PR, who shall remain nameless, had bought a €1.50 ticket for a bus from Nice to the Palais des Festivals, but hadn’t realised it was customary in France to validate it before travelling.

When the inspector clocked that the ticket hadn’t been properly validated, he slapped him with a €40 fine. But said PR was having none of it, accusing the inspector of picking on him because he was British. The stand-off went on for so long that the police were almost called. The PR eventually backed down and paid the fine.

He was only staying in Nice to save money on pricey Cannes hotels, but was left wondering whether the amount he saved on accommodation was worth the drama.

It is not the first time the prudent PR has tried to save money during events in the south of France. At Mipim a few years ago, he was tweeting live updates from the event – from his office in London.
