There’s often many empty desks in property firms during August

If you email someone in the property industry in August, there’s a strong chance you will receive an out-of-office reply.

Most of these messages are mundane. “I am away until [INSERT DATE]. If you need to speak to someone urgently please contact [INSERT NAME HERE].”

But Simon Knight, a senior director at BNP Paribas Real Estate, likes to pen something far more considered and literary.

Property Eye was alerted by an industry source to a typically gnomic recent out-of-office message from Knight.

“An experienced wood cutter took a few days off to sharpen his axe,” it reads. “His younger colleagues laughed at him and said they would cut his quota as well as their own and be amply rewarded. When the experienced man returned he quickly cut through not only his quota but also a significant part of his younger colleagues’ quota as they were tired from using blunt instruments.

“I am away from the office until Friday 27th August. Consider me grinding. You can be assured there will be the usual palpable sense of the presence of my absence.”

Beat that!
