Two US passenger jets controlled by terrorists struck the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, while another hijacked plane flew into the Pentagon and a fourth hijacked plane, thought to be heading for the Capitol Building in Washington DC, crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back.

The attacks on the Twin Towers killed almost 3,000 people. Around 14m sq ft of office space was also wiped out, accounting for more than 10% of the district’s total and 30% of its prime space.
