Signing of anchor tenant may finally kickstart Westfield and Hammerson’s much delayed £1.4bn scheme.
The developers have courted John Lewis since taking on the project in 2013 and although the company itself described Croydon as a long-term target location, the sheer length of the negotiations led many to doubt whether it would ever sign on the dotted line.
Indeed, so important was the deal that some experts speculated that Westfield and Hammerson would scrap the scheme if John Lewis did not sign up. Now it has, could this finally kickstart the project and will the giant 165,000 sq ft store be a success?
