Amazon has won a £3m tax rebate from Cannock Chase District Council after arguing that the mezzanine in its warehouse does not count as floor space.

The council has responded saying that the rebate will “severely deplete” its funds, according to the BBC.

A spokesperson for Amazon commented: “Business rates are part of Amazon’s broader £18bn investment in the UK since 2010.”

However, councillor Gordon Alcott said that it was a “major blow” for the local authority.

“I feel sorry for our town centres where there doesn’t appear to be a level playing field between the overheads paid by bricks and mortar businesses against those paid by online traders,” he added.
