Philip Anschutz, the US billionaire who has redeveloped the Millennium Dome, is applying to build one of the temporary sporting venues for the London 2012 Olympics. Financial Times

AEG, Anschutz’s global entertainments business, last night re-opened the Dome, now the rebranded as O2, after a £350m refurbishment. It will host the 2012 gymnastic and basketball finals.

David Campbell, AEG’s European-based chief executive, said the company had been part of a joint application with architect HOK and structural engineer Buro Happold, two of its O2 partners, to build the venue that will stage preliminary basketball matches on the Olympic Park in east London.
