Seven internationally-renowned architectural practices have been drawn up to design the new Library of Birmingham.

Foreign Office Architects, Foster & Partners, Hopkins Architects, Mecanoo, OMA, Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Wilkinson Eyre are all on the list.

Birmingham City Council leader Cllr Mike Whitby, said the seven were selected out from more than 100 firms. He said: ‘Their reputations for designing high-profile, iconic landmark buildings are what resulted in their selection. The announcement of the shortlist today is a major milestone on the road to delivering a world call library in Birmingham.’

Capita Symonds is project and cost manager for the £193m library. It is expected that an appointment will be made this summer.
