The agency said it will take steps to make all its premises carbon neutral within the next decade, through retrofitting and energy efficiency projects. All future offices will be acquired and fitted out to be carbon neutral.

It said it was in the process of “developing and implementing a roadmap” for how it would hit these targets and added it would work to “inspire and lead the transition to net-zero-carbon buildings and communities”.

Avison Young said that it would also train its staff to be “carbon literate” in their work with clients and that it was already working on a number of “major mandates” from clients with a sustainable element.

The business follows in the footsteps of JLL, which became the first UK property company to sign up to the WGBC’s cause last year.

“The climate crisis requires immediate action and Avison Young is committed to leading the way,” said Avison Young’s UK president Jason Sibthorpe. “We believe that the most successful companies realise profits are inextricably linked to social purpose. Taking action on climate change is a key part of this.”

The agency’s head of sustainability Jon Gibson added: “We are in a position to influence not only our own carbon impact but also those of our clients and the communities beyond our buildings.

“We are committed to advocating for net-zero-carbon buildings while supporting our clients with clear roadmaps on how to achieve this.”
