Stephen Nelson, chief executive of airports operator BAA, is squaring up to the challenge of opening Heathrow’s Terminal 5 in a year’s time, which will also signal the demolition of Terminal 2 to make way for Heathrow East – a new terminal even larger than T5. Sunday Times

The plan for Heathrow East will go before the local council next week, and to Ken Livingstone’s Greater London Authority in two weeks’ time. baa has pledged that Heathrow East will open in June 2012 - just in time for the London Olympics.

Meanwhile BAA faces a Competition Commission inquiry into its ownership of seven of the UK’s biggest airports, including the three London hubs, Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, and the largest Scottish airports, at Glasgow and Edinburgh.
