Lend Lease’s Mark Boyes has been appointed to act as project director at the Australian company’s £1.5bn Elephant & Castle development in south London.

Boyes, who previously worked at Burford, was previously acting as a senior development manager for Lend Lease’s Park Place joint venture with Minerva in Croydon. Lend Lease has ended its involvement in this venture.

He will be responsible for carrying out the development and Lend Lease said it has already begun negotiations with St Modwen regarding purchasing the ageing shopping centre.

The shopping centre will eventually be demolished to make way for the 170 acre scheme which will comprise a new retail complex, 6,000 new homes and flats and will create an estimated 4,000 new jobs. Lend Lease is developing 4m sq ft of the 170 acre area.

It will be completed in 2014 and hopes to end years of decline in the area which has made Elephant one of the most rundown and congested areas in London.

Retail tenants such as Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and Debenhams have expressed interest in the scheme which will be pedestrianised to reduce traffic and pollution in the area.
