Brierley Hill, the area surrounding Merry Hill shopping centre in the west Midlands is set to be given the status of town centre by the end of 2007.

The news comes from the Government’s review of phase one of the Black Country’s Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) released today by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

The communities secretary Hazel Blears, has recognised the economic importance of Brierley Hill, alongside Dudley, within the Black Country and has given the go ahead.

As revealed in Property Week (05-11-04) the report sets out major regeneration plans for the entire Black Country and Brierley Hill will benefit from an estimated £800m through further regeneration of the High Street, the Waterfront and Merry Hill shopping centre.

Merry Hill owners, Westfield and QIC, have been work closely with BHRP to put together a plan for the regeneration of the region.
