Britain is the dustbin of Europe and could run out of landfill space within nine years as households dump more rubbish than any other European Union country according to the Local Government Association. Daily Telegaph
Britain sends the same amount to landfill as the 18 EU members with the lowest dumping rates combined.
109 square miles has been dedicated exclusively to landfill, the Local Government Association said, warning that Britain will run out of space for dumping in less than a decade if trends continue.
The LGA said Britain sent more than 22.6 million tons to landfill in 2004-5 - the most recent dates comparable with the rest of Europe.
This contrasted with 17.6 million tons from Italy, 14.2 million from Spain, 12 million from France and 8.6 million from Poland.
