David Cameron’s Conservatives are putting £100bn of investment in energy infrastructure in jeopardy and risking power cuts by opposing planning reforms, the CBI said yesterday in a new attack on the opposition’s business policies.

The employers’ lobby group said dozens of energy projects could be delayed or abandoned if the planning bill passed narrowly by MPs last month is derailed in the Lords where the government has no majority.

The projects include power stations to meet rising power demand and to replace ageing plants; offshore wind farms to meet European Union renewable energy targets; upgrades to the transmission network; and increased gas storage capacity.
