ProLogis European Properties (PEPR) has temporarily let 500,000 sq ft of industrial space at ProLogis Park Kingston to Amazon.co.uk for the Christmas period.

The fund has let the giant distribution warehouse in Peterborough on a six month lease so that Amazon.co.uk can open up a ‘temporary fulfilment centre’ that will allow it to handle the millions of extra orders it receives over Christmas.

Amazon said that the letting should create 170 temporary jobs for the Peterborough area.

ProLogis, the fund’s manager, carried out the deal which will see the company move into the space in October.

Arthur Valdez, vice president of UK operations for Amazon, said: ‘At our peak during the festive season last year, we were shipping one million items per day from the UK to customers all over the country as well as Europe and the rest of the world.

‘Since then, the selection of products available on our website has increased significantly and customer demand has continued to rise.

‘This new temporary fulfilment centre will provide more capacity, more flexibility and more resource, ensuring that we continue to deliver to the high standards that our customers expect from us.’

‘Our goal was to find a centre in a great location with a strong local workforce and Kingston Park in Peterborough offered us just that.’

ProLogis European Properties declined to comment on the deal.

Burbage Realty acted for ProLogis in the deal. Savills acted for Amazon.co.uk.
