The City of London Corporation has confirmed the promotion of Peter Bennett to the role of City surveyor following the retirement of Ted Hartill

Bennett, who has been deputy City surveyor since 1990, will take the role in January next year. Hartill has been in the post since 1985.

The position oversees activity relating to commercial property and construction owned by the City of London, which owns around 20% of the property in the City and also has extensive holdings in the West End and Midtown areas of London.

The City surveyor also has responsibility for the City of London’s operational property such as the Guildhall and Mansion House.

The City surveyor manages the City Property Advisory Team, which aims to find and retain premises for businesses in the Square Mile.

Archie Galloway, chairman of the City of London’s property subcommittee, said: ‘I have worked with Peter over many years and know he will bring to the post substantial experience. He is quite rightly respected within the industry.’

Bennett said: ‘This is a demanding but very fulfilling role at a time when the Square Mile is going through exciting changes.’
