Admiral James Bond Stockdale was the highest-ranking US officer held in the ‘Hanoi Hilton’ during the war in Vietnam, where he was incarcerated for eight years. When asked, ‘Who didn’t make it out?’ he replied, ‘That’s easy, the optimists.’
