Stockport Borough Council has granted planning permission for a 26,300 sq ft mixed-use scheme along the River Mersey in Stockport on a gateway site at the junction of Heaton Lane and King Street West.

The scheme, which will be developed by Corovest, comprises a hotel, offices and residential accommodation. It was designed by Altrincham-based architects Pozzoni with engineering consultancy advice from Hilson Moran.

Simon Clark, a director at Pozzoni, said: ‘The aim is to create a development which meets the Stockport Borough Council’s aspiration of a landmark, gateway building at this prominent entrance to the Town Centre, without detracting from the historic Viaduct and the nearby listed mill buildings.

'The dramatic character of the River Mersey, as it passes beneath the viaduct has been enhanced by the form and scale of the proposals reinstating the “gorge-like” quality so often seen in old prints of the town centre.

'A riverside walk is also proposed which will form part of a wider long-term footpath network along the River Mersey.’
