Council blocks Oxford Street pedestrianisation plans

Oxford Street

The Mayor of London’s plans to pedestrianise large parts of Oxford Street have been by blocked by Westminster Council.

The council said it had withdrawn support for the scheme in a letter to residents following two public consultations saying they were “off the table for good”.

Under the plans, unveiled by Sadiq Khan last November, the stretch of Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Oxford Circus would have been made traffic free by December 2018 to coincide with the launch of Elizabeth Line services.
