Crossrail has moved a step closer after notices to buy 13 buildings around Tottenham Court Road station were issued today.

Cross London Rail Links, the government appointed company tasked with delivering Crossrail, has sent letters to the buildings’ owners indicating its intention to take control of the properties.

Tottenham Court Road station’s ticket hall is to be expanded to six times to enable Crossrail to operate through the building.

To redevelop the site the buildings, which were named in the Crossrail Bill in 2005, will have to be demolished.

Possession of the buildings is expected top take place in January 2009, when compulsory purchase orders will take effect and the properties will be transferred the government.

Construction is expected to start in 2009.
