Aberdeen is set for a Donald Trump-style golf resort after plans for the tycoon’s £1bn leisure scheme were approved.

Last night Aberdeen City Council approved outline consent for the 1,400 acre Balmedie development in Formartine comprising two championship golf courses, a five-star hotel, a golf academy, and around 1,000 holiday houses and 500 houses.

The councillors of the Formartine Area Committee approved the by seven votes to four last night. It is estimated that the resort on the Menie estate will generate more than £60m a year to local economy and create more than 5,000 jobs.

Teed off

The application has been mired in controversy as the site of the proposed golf course is on a site of special scientific interest and opponents have said it will harm the environment.

Trump’s application still has to go before a full council meeting and the Scottish Executive will have the final say on whether the scheme should go ahead.
