Months of uncertainty ended yesterday when Galliford Try, the construction company, was hired to restore the landmark building that forms the façade of St Pancras railway station.

The appointment comes 18 months after Laing O’Rourke, the original contract-holder, walked off the premises after a dispute with Manhattan Loft Corporation, the client.

Under the £103m contract, Galliford Try will renovate the old Midland Grand Hotel, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and designated one of English Heritage’s ten most important buildings.
