The government has committed to reducing the number of government-owned office buildings from 800 to under 200, saving £3.6bn over the next 20 years, and has outlined plans to free up land for housing in its 2018 estate strategy.

The new five- year Government Estate Strategy, released today, reveals that the government estate has already been reduced by more than 1,000 properties, raising £2bn in government building sales since 2014. A further £300m a year has been saved in operating costs.
