The latest phase of one of the largest rail and sea freight terminals in the UK has got the go-ahead from the local council.

Peel Ports Group’s Liverpool Intermodal Freeport Terminal (LIFT) can now grow to over 4m sq ft after getting the Green light from Sefton Borough Council for the next phase.

Peel will start construction on the second phase – 400,000 sq ft – later this year. It won consent after successfully letting the first 600,000 sq ft at the development to tenants including the RH Group and Christian Salveson.

The whole development is expected to complete by 2009.

Frank Robotham, Peel Ports marketing director, said the ongoing success at LIFT ‘continues to reflect the demand from logistics companies to be part of a port community that offers a strategic location which maximises efficiency and minimises distribution costs.

’Completion of the LIFT project is just one element in the long term expansion plan for the Port of Liverpool.’
