Nearly a quarter of households say housing costs are causing them 'stress or depression', according to a survey of nearly 7,000 people by Shelter, the housing charity.
Homeowners are beset by fears of falling prices and rising arrears, just as banks make it much harder to remortgage.
The survey found that one in nine households – the equivalent of 3m people – had sold possessions to help pay housing costs.
