The Mayor of London today announced new planning policies to force developers into providing renewable energy on-site.

In his latest version of the London Plan Ken Livingstone announced that all new buildings will have to invest in or link to decentralised power – electricity provided locally to the building.

In addition 20% of energy not coming from a decentralised source will have to be provided through on-site sources like wind turbines.

Zero carbon goal

‘This is an important step towards our zero carbon goal, and one that developers can, and must, step up to deliver,’ said Livingstone.

‘There is broad and strong support for the London Plan’s new energy policies and developers, architects and engineers are already making proposals that not only meet the current targets but often exceed them.

‘That is how I know that the new London Plan targets are achievable as well as essential.’

The announcement follows consultation with an independent panel of inspectors last summer.
