King Sturge has secured planning permission for 649 new homes and a new primary school in Canning Town, East London, on behalf of Countryside Properties.

Award-winning architects Maccreanor Lavington prepared the masterplan and designed the residential element, with the school designed by Mouchel.

King Sturge associate, Matthew Inman, said: 'The ambitions of the scheme required close collaboration with the London Borough of Newham, and the brokering of a Planning Delivery Agreement between the Council and Countryside Properties was integral in securing the delivery of planning permission within the requisite time frame.'

The redevelopment of the site is the first major step in the comprehensive regeneration of Canning Town, and involved the decanting of existing residents and demolition of a number of existing tower blocks.

The proposed new development aims to improve the mix of housing types and tenures, providing a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and 3 and 4 bedroom houses, with 35% to be provided as affordable housing.
