Laing O’Rourke, Britain’s biggest construction company, is to cut one in five of its UK support staff, around 650 jobs in total, as part of a sweeping reorganisation, according to The Times.

Ray O’Rourke, chairman and chief executive of the privately owned company, is understood to have sent a message to staff yesterday in which he blamed the redundancies on the delayed impact of the recession and on the need for Laing O’Rourke to focus on what it has identified as growth sectors, such as energy and waste management.
