M&S and Debenhams Christmas struggles contrast with Tesco and John Lewis gains

Debenhams and Marks & Spencer have both reported a fall in sales during the Christmas trading period.

Debenhams said like-for-like sales fell 5.7% in the 18 weeks to 5 January while Marks & Spencer saw like-for-like sales in the 13 weeks to 29 December fall 2.2%.

In a busy day for retail trading updates, John Lewis said sales in the seven-week Christmas period were 1.4% higher than for the same period last year.
