The Charity Commission is investigating claims that the National Trust is abusing its position by threatening to block Government plans to allow development on green belt land, it said yesterday. Daily Telegraph

The Commission received a written complaint about the conduct of the Trust, which announced at the weekend that it was prepared to buy Green belt land to stop three million new homes blighting the Countryside.

If the Trust is found to have breached guidelines it could have its accounts frozen and its trustees removed.

A spokesman for the Charity Commission said yesterday: “We’re aware of recent reports in the press, and have received a complaint. We are currently considering these concerns to see what role, if any, there may be for the Commission in this matter.”
