Designs for the £700m transformation of the site where Newcastle Brown Ale was brewed for decades into Europe’s finest science quarter have been unveiled.

The Science Central project, which underlines the shift of northern cities’ economies from volume manufacturing to new technology, comprises redevelopment of the former Gallowgate brewery site, on the edge of Newcastle city centre.

The plan for the 19-acre site combines facilities for science businesses, bases for further and higher education scientific research activities, student accommodation and family homes, alongside leisure and retail facilities.

The redevelopment could generate up to 5,000 jobs and aims to create one of the world’s top locations for science, business and economic development.
