Housebuilder Durkan Estates has kicked off plans to develop a mixed-used development at its Gun Wharf site in the London borough of Tower Hamlets.

It has appointed planning consultants Dialogue to liaise with the community on its canal-side development. The scheme, between Old Ford Road, Bow, and the Hertford Union Canal, will comprise between 140-150 homes ranging from studio flats to four and five-bed maisonettes with 35% of the units provided as affordable housing.

Ground floor commercial space will be provided along Old Ford Road and fronting onto Gunmakers Lane.

People's park

Durkan Estates said its new development will provide a more accessible and safer tree-lined Green link to adjacent Victoria Park which was one of the first parks in London created for general public use. Opened in 1848 it became known as the People’s Park.

Architects Stock Woolstencroft have been appointed to design the scheme and a planning application is expected to be submitted spring 2008.

Dialogue partner Mark Brown said: ‘This project offers an excellent opportunity for creating residential, employment and leisure opportunities and we look forward to working with the local community in the process of evolving the final scheme.’
