New West End Company is planning to entice shoppers to London’s Oxford Street by closing its West End to traffic over the second May bank holiday weekend.

The organisation, which promotes retail in the West End, will pedestrianise the street from Oxford Circus to Marble Arch between noon and 5pm.

It will be the first time in history that the west end of Oxford Street has been closed to traffic in the ‘summer season’.

Shop West End VIP Day in December is the other time that the street, along with Regent Street, is closed to traffic.

Richard Dickinson, chief executive of the New West End Company, said: ‘This bank holiday event is all about encouraging families into London’s West End, particularly Oxford Street, for the beginning of the summer season.

‘With fantastic offers available across the stores and an incredible family-friendly atmosphere, the traffic free day will give a real boost to trade in the area.’

The New West End Company said many shops would stay open to 9pm to mark the occasion.
