Primark, the low-cost clothing retailer, saw like-for-like sales increase by 5% over the six months to the end of February as Britons’ appetite for catwalk-inspired fashions and cheap basics showed little sign of abating.

Total revenue at the 187-store chain topped £1bn for the first time over the six months. Sales rose by 18% to £1.06bn, while profits increased by 10% to £122m.

Primark’s solid performance is in stark contrast with other large fashion retailers around the world, which have seen sales fall due to the credit crisis.
