Basildon Council has short-listed three leisure operators to develop its 140,000 sq ft sports village.

Community Solutions for Leisure, DC Leisure Management and Orion Basildon, went through to the next round to develop the £35m Basildon Sporting Village, which could be used as a training camp for the 2012 Olympics, following a cabinet meeting last night.

Olympic facilities

The Sporting Village will include facilities to replace the South Essex Gymnastics Centre at Cranes Farm Road and the indoor sports centre at Markhams Chase, as well as an Olympic-standard 50-metre swimming pool.

Competitive dialogue

The three parties will now enter into ‘competitive dialogue’ with the council and the Basildon Renaissance Partnership before submitting final tenders in September.

The operator will be finally selected in December this year and the council aims to open the Sporting Village in 2010.
