Sainsbury’s has got the go ahead for a new store, medical centre and residential scheme at Portswood Bus Depot in Southampton.

Sainsbury’s will start on site at the development once the bus depot is relocated and plans to open the store by the autumn of 2010.

The plans include a 40,000 sq ft foodstore, a medical centre, 140 homes, a 325-space car park, and a children’s play area.

Richard Haynes, Sainsbury’s development executive, said: ‘Sainsbury’s is very pleased to have again won the support of Southampton City Council for a new Sainsbury’s store in Portswood and we look forward to serving the local community.

'We’re proud of the substantial benefits that these proposals will bring to local residents, who have consistently supported our aspiration to bring a new store and medical centre to Portswood.’
