Sainsbury’s has announced plans to build a 40,000 sq ft store in Morecambe.

The supermarket giant is proposing to develop the store at Christie Park, the current home of Morecambe Football Club.

A planning application will be submitted in the next few weeks and, if granted, development could start in summer 2010 after Morecambe Football Club has moved to its new stadium at Westgate.

The plans are a part of Sainsbury’s expansion programme for the north of England.

Joanne Try, Sainsbury’s regional development executive for the north of England, said: ‘Our research has identified the north as a key target for expansion for Sainsbury’s, as there are many areas where money is being lost from local economies when people are forced to travel away from the local area to do their weekly food shop.’

Sainsbury’s is aiming for a 10% increase in the number of its new stores across the north of England.
