East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, managers of the Lister hospital in Stevenage, Hertfordshire plan a £100m redevelopment of the hospital.

Planning advisor Barton Willmore has submitted a planning application to expand the hospital to include a permanent acute service at the hospital.

The development will take place at the 37 year old hospital in phases between 2009 and 2015.

It will include an extension to the maternity services unit; a new seven-level multi-storey car park, consolidation of emergency services, including A&E; and the construction of a new 300,000 sq ft south block with additional operating theatres, critical care and ward accommodation.

An outline planning application to Stevenage Borough Council was submitted for the 555 bed district general hospital this month.

The hospital serves 500,000 residents in east and north Hertfordshire.
