MIPIM 2007: Sir Terry Leahy, the chief executive of Tesco, gave his backing to Liverpool at MIPIM today 25 years after one of its stores was burned down in the Toxteth riots.

Leahy, who was born in Liverpool, said that Liverpool had become an attractive destination for investors and said that Tesco was once again investing in the city.

"If you have invested in Liverpool as Tesco has done then you have made the right choice," said Leahy.

Leahy said that Liverpool could should now consider itself in the race between the world's top cities.

"In the 21st century cities must compete, but how far you can go in that competition depends on your confidence, skills and your ambition, said Leahy. "You must improve the quqlity of life in your city and Liverpool can now provide a rich and rewarding investment."
