The Office of Fair Trading is to launch an investigation after Tesco used a local retailer to 'front' a planning application for a massive supermarket development in Devon.

The Sunday Telegraph reported in June that a planning application for an 80,000 sq ft store in Barnstaple was submitted in the name of local retailer Brian Fords – despite Tesco having acquired the independent retailer a year earlier.

No mention was made of Tesco’s involvement in the scheme, in fact, in the planning application the proposed supermarket was branded Brian Fords and the involvement of the local retailer trumpeted – sparking accusations of underhand tactics by rival retailers.
