Capital & Regional and Morley Fund Management’s the Mall Fund has confirmed that it has submitted plans for an extension to its Luton shopping centre

It plans a 95,000 sq ft (8,826 sq m) extension to the former Luton Arndale centre in the town.

The £15m scheme to remodel the St Georges Square end of the shopping centre will create a centre totalling 831,000 sq ft (77,202 sq m), and create eight new retail units, which are expected to be open for trading by Christmas 2008.

Luton Borough Council granted planning permission to the previous owners for a similar proposal last year. The main changes made by the Mall to this plan include the size of the new shops and the design of the outside of the centre.

Subject to receiving approval for these proposals, the Mall hopes to commence construction in Spring 2007.

Broadway Malyan is the scheme’s architect.

Meanwhile, Irish developer Ballymore is planning a mixed scheme at Power Court in the town. It submitted a planning application for the 538,000 sq ft (49,981 sq m) development last year, but its application has been held up by the council.
