Controversial plans by Donald Trump to create a world class golf course on links in north-east Scotland were backed last night by a committee of Aberdeenshire council. Financial Times, Daily Telegraph

Trump wants to spend more than £1bn developing the 1,000-acre site on the Menie Estate, 12 miles north of Aberdeen, to provide two championship courses, a five-star hotel, 950 timeshare properties and 500 houses.

The scheme will now go to the council’s infrastructure committee before being referred to Scottish ministers, who will decide whether there should be a public inquiry. The proposals have been supported by local and national business organisations, who are keen to see Aberdeen diversify its economic base towards tourism ahead of the rundown of North Sea oil.
