The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), which Property Week launched The Climate Crisis Challenge in partnership with last week, has released new energy performance targets for offices aiming for net-zero-carbon status.

The council estimates that the office sector will need to cut its energy use by 60% to achieve a net-zero-carbon economy.

Using this as a starting point, it has set energy efficiency targets that become progressively tougher every five years. The targets are an addition to the UKGBC’s 2019 report Net Zero Carbon Buildings: A Framework Definition, which set out guidance for buildings to achieve net-zero-carbon status.

The UKGBC said owners should make cutting energy usage their top priority, ahead of renewable energy use and carbon offsetting.

The Climate Crisis Challenge will call on the industry to come up with new ideas to radically improve the green credentials of property.
