A £400m Walsall ‘Gigaport’ has received outline planning consent.

Walsall Regeneration Company (WRC) is leading the development for a business quarter with communications technology to attract new industries and create high quality jobs in the area.

The regeneration company hopes the office corridor, with the Walsall College at its heart, will use optical technologies that will enable companies to do business hundreds of times faster than current broadband speeds.

Dr Peter Cromar, WRC chief executive, said: ‘The outline planning consent from Walsall Council’s Development Control Committee is one of the biggest planning decisions made in the West Midlands region this year. It is a very significant step in the process to deliver this scheme for a 56.8 acre site that could create 3,000 jobs.’

The scheme will include 1.3m sq ft of offices, a 43,056 sq ft data centre, a hotel, and health and sports facilities.
